Celestron Outland X 8×42 Binoculars Review [2024]

Celestron Outland X 8×42 Binoculars Review [2024]

The Celestron Outland X 8×42 Binoculars are a great budget-friendly option for nature enthusiasts and casual birdwatchers. They offer good image quality, waterproof construction, and a lifetime guarantee for peace of mind.

While not top-of-the-line in terms of sharpness and clarity, they deliver plenty of value for the price. Due to their weight, holding them steady can be challenging, making them less ideal for tracking fast-moving birds.

The Celestron Outland X 8×42 Binoculars are a solid choice for beginners and hobbyists looking for reliable optics without breaking the bank. They are versatile enough for casual birding, nature walks, and even sporting events.

Good Optics for the Price

My hike through Florida’s Big Cypress National Preserve, with my nephew last year, gave me a chance to test out his Celestron Outland X 8×42 binoculars.

The multi-coated lenses worked like magic to bring the intricate white feather streaks on a black Anhinga in clear focus. Every detail of an Egret or Heron was rendered in stunning clarity.

Even in Big Cypress’s trademark hazy mornings, the Celestron Outland X 8×42 binoculars provided reasonably clear images, no doubt because of the 42mm lens size.

However, viewing was a bit more challenging in deeper shade or duskier hours. But hey, at this price point, a little compromise is expected.

The 8x magnification and 42mm optical lens diameter is a good balance for beginner level birdwatching and the Celestron Outland X 8×42 binoculars perform well.

Focusing was smooth sailing thanks to the large central wheel. I could not use them to focus on nearby insects or flowers but they worked just fine to view birds gliding over the swamp waters.

Ergonomic but a tad Heavy

The Celestron Outland X 8×42 binoculars felt substantial in my hands, not bulky, but large. I would say that the weight is a bit much for extended treks. But for me, it was a small price to pay for the stability it offered.

The ergonomic design of the Celestron Outland X 8×42 binoculars is a clear winner. The rubberized armoring provided a secure grip even when my palms were slick with sweat. The molded finger impressions cradled my hands comfortably.

The long eye relief of the binoculars is very useful, especially if you wear eyeglasses. And the twist-up eyecups? They make life easier by adjusting to the eyeglasses with a satisfying click.

The fact that these binoculars are waterproof is another great advantage when you are hiking the swamps and observing wetland birds.

Terrific Value for the Price

In terms of value for money, it’s hard to beat the Celestron Outland X 8×42 binoculars. Priced at a fraction of what you would pay for similar models, these binoculars deliver performance that rivals top brands.

As someone who has extensively researched binoculars, I can confidently say that these are great for beginners in birdwatching or wildlife viewing. They truly offer exceptional value for money.

Bottom Line

To summarize my review of the Celestron Outland X 8×42 Binoculars

Optics: Crisp, clear, and colorful. The multi-coated lenses brought every bird into focus, while the 8x magnification offered the perfect balance between detail and field of view. I must admit they faltered a bit in low light, but at this price point, that’s a minor quibble.

Design: Built for comfort and durability. The rubberized armoring provided a secure grip, while the ergonomic design let me hold them steady for hours. The twist-up eyecups and the long eye relief are welcome features. Some will find it a bit on the heavier side.

Value: Unbeatable. These binoculars deliver high-end performance at a budget-friendly price. They’re perfect for casual birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

Choosing the Perfect Pair of Binoculars: A Buyer’s Guide

When it comes to selecting the perfect pair of binoculars, there are a few key factors to consider. Firstly, determine the purpose for which you will be using them.

Are you an avid birdwatcher, a wildlife enthusiast, or perhaps a keen traveler? This will help determine the appropriate magnification and objective lens size for your needs.

Secondly, consider the binoculars’ weight and size, as you’ll want something comfortable to carry if you are constantly on the move. Weight is also important if you need to hold the binoculars for extended periods such as in wildlife research.

Additionally, it’s important to assess the optical quality, such as lens coatings and prism type, for optimal clarity and brightness. Lastly, don’t forget to set a budget and compare different models within your price range.

Whenever possible, try to test the binoculars on your shortlist before making a purchase. Make sure they feel comfortable in your hands and provide a clear and sharp image. Read reliable reviews on sites like Binocular Buzz.

Here are a few things to check out before selecting the perfect binoculars to suit your needs and enhance your outdoor experiences!

  • Magnification: The “8X” in the model name refers to the magnification power of these binoculars. This means objects will appear eight times closer than they would to the naked eye. Generally speaking, 8x and 10x are good magnification levels for birdwatching and wildife viewing
  • Objective Lens Diameter: The “42” in the model name represents the diameter of the objective lenses in millimeters. A larger objective lens diameter allows more light to enter the binoculars, resulting in brighter images. Keep in mind that, typically the weight of a binocular goes up with the objective lens diameter
  • Field of View: The field of view determines how much of the surrounding area you can see through the binoculars. A wider field of view is generally preferred for activities like birdwatching or sports. The FOV of the Celestron Outland X 8×42 Binoculars at 356′ is fairly decent
  • Optical Coatings: The Celestron Outland X 8×42 Binoculars feature multi-coated optics, which enhance light transmission and minimize reflections. Check if the binoculars you’re considering have these coatings, as they can greatly improve image quality
  • Durability and Design: Consider the build quality of the binoculars and whether they are waterproof and fog-proof. This is particularly important if you plan to use them in challenging weather conditions or near water bodies
  • Comfort and Ergonomics: Look for binoculars that have a comfortable grip and adjustable eyecups. This will ensure a better viewing experience, especially for extended periods of use
  • Accessories: Check if the binoculars come with additional accessories like a carrying case, lens covers, or a neck strap. These can be useful for protecting your investment and making them easier to carry around

FAQ about Binoculars

How to care for binoculars?

To properly care for and maintain your Celestron Outland X 8×42 Binoculars, you need to ensure:

  1. Regular Cleaning: Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the lenses and body of the binoculars. Avoid using rough materials or excessive force, as this can scratch the lenses or damage the rubber coating.
  2. Lens Protection: When not in use, it’s a good idea to keep the binoculars in a protective case or pouch to prevent dust, dirt, and scratches. Always use lens caps to cover the objective lenses and eyepieces when transporting or storing the binoculars.
  3. Waterproof Maintenance: Although these binoculars are waterproof, it’s still important to rinse them with fresh water if they come into contact with saltwater or other contaminants. After rinsing, carefully dry the binoculars with a soft cloth to prevent water spots.
  4. Avoid Extreme Temperatures: It’s best to avoid exposing your binoculars to extreme heat or cold, as this can affect their performance and potentially damage the internal components. Store them in a cool, dry place when not in use.
  5. Regular Inspections: Periodically examine the binoculars for any signs of damage or wear. Pay attention to the focus mechanism, eyecups, and any other moving parts to ensure they are functioning properly. If you notice any issues, consult the manufacturer’s instructions or contact their customer support for guidance.
