Exceptional Optics

Recently, on a 2-day hike to Charleston Peak, near Las Vegas I got a chance to test out the Nikon Prostaff 5 8×42 Binoculars. These binoculars provide exceptional image quality and clarity. The multilayer coatings on the lens and prism surfaces enhance light transmittance, no doubt, enhance the natural and clear view.

The BAK-4 glass, known for superior quality, ensures excellent optics. I noticed some minor softening around the image circle’s edge as well as minimal color fringing around high-contrast edges, but I must say that the Nikon Prostaff 5 8×42 Binoculars have among the lowest chromatic aberration in this price range.

The turn-and-slide rubber eyecups allow for a custom fit, ensuring maximum comfort during extended use. The long eye-relief is a welcome feature for eyeglass wearers.

Look & Feel

The Nikon Prostaff 5 8×42 Binoculars incorporate a robust and comfortable design. The durable fiberglass-reinforced polycarbonate chassis results in a slip-resistant grip, especially in cold and wet weather. The binoculars felt solid and stable in my hands, possibly due to the closed-bridge configuration

The large slip center focus wheel, with precise focus control, was a bonus as I could focus the binoculars even while wearing gloves.  The right eye dioptric adjustment collar accommodates individual eye prescriptions, and the twist-up/click-stop rubber eyecups allow for comfortable use with or without eyewear.

I do not wear eyeglasses but I appreciate the long 17.6mm eye relief and wide 5.25mm exit pupil. I had little eye strain and viewing was comfortable throughout my hike.

The textured protective rubber armoring and ergonomic indents on the sides of the optical tubes result in a secure grip and comfortable handling, for extended periods even in cold weather. The chassis material’s temperature resistance prevents expansion and contraction, ensuring the optical components remain in alignment over time for sharp focus.

In essence the Nikon Prostaff 5 8×42 Binoculars are highly portable and perfect for long hours of hiking, backpacking or any outdoor adventure.

Size & Weight

Weighing 22.2 ounces and constructed with a fiberglass-reinforced polycarbonate resin, the Nikon Prostaff 5 8×42 Binoculars are light enough to be comfortably carried hanging from the neck strap or tucked away in the backpack.

Bottom Line

The Nikon Prostaff 5 8×42 Binoculars produce bright and clear high-contrast images with true color rendition across the entire field of view. In addition to the impressive optical performance, features like nitrogen-filling, O-ring sealing, and a reinforced polycarbonate chassis, make them a versatile and go-to choice for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Choosing the Perfect Pair of Binoculars: A Buyer’s Guide

When it comes to selecting the perfect pair of binoculars, there are a few key factors to consider. Firstly, determine the purpose for which you will be using them.

Are you an avid birdwatcher, a wildlife enthusiast, or perhaps a keen traveler? This will help determine the appropriate magnification and objective lens size for your needs.

Secondly, consider the binoculars’ weight and size, as you’ll want something comfortable to carry if you are constantly on the move. Weight is also important if you need to hold the binoculars for extended periods such as in wildlife research.

Additionally, it’s important to assess the optical quality, such as lens coatings and prism type, for optimal clarity and brightness. Lastly, don’t forget to set a budget and compare different models within your price range.

Whenever possible, try to test the binoculars on your shortlist before making a purchase. Make sure they feel comfortable in your hands and provide a clear and sharp image. Read reliable reviews on sites like Binocular Buzz.

Here are a few things to check out before selecting the perfect binoculars to suit your needs and enhance your outdoor experience!

  • Optical Quality: The Nikon Prostaff 5 8×42 Binoculars come with multi-coated lenses that deliver sharp and bright images. Look for high-quality optics to ensure clear viewing and accurate color reproduction
  • Field of View: This refers to the width of the area you can see through the binoculars. A wider field of view is beneficial when observing fast-moving objects or scanning large areas. Look for a suitable field of view based on your intended use
  • Design and Comfort: Check for a durable and ergonomic design that fits comfortably in your hands. Look for features like a rubberized coating for a secure grip, and consider the weight and size of the binoculars, especially if you plan to carry them for extended periods
  • Weather Resistance: The Nikon Prostaff 5 8×42 Binoculars are built to withstand various weather conditions. Look for features like waterproof and fog-proof construction, which will ensure your binoculars perform well even in challenging environments
  • Eye Relief: If you wear glasses, consider binoculars with sufficient eye relief. This distance between the eyepiece and your eyes determines whether you can comfortably view the entire field of view while wearing glasses
  • Accessories: Check if the binoculars come with any additional accessories such as lens caps, carrying cases, or neck straps. These can enhance the overall usability and convenience of your purchase
